DVD Railscene No. 24 – Autumn 1990

Contents:
Introduction: No. 3 ‘Sir Haydn’ leaves Nant Gwernol on the Tal-y-llyn.
Steam on the Met: We were invited by LUL to film Met No.1 Pannier 9466 and Standard Tank 80080 at work on the Metropolitan main line during July 1990. This is a major feature which includes the engines on shed at Ruislip and Neasden, as well as at work on the main line, changing engines at Amersham, special staff workings, including No.1 on the Stanmore branch, unique footage of No.1 at Baker Street on the Circle Line and Upminster Open Day with no.1 on the shuttle.
Cab Ride – Salisbury to Waterloo: Last of the principal main lines into London. Unlikely to be electrified now, the Salisbury line will ‘make do’ with 50s until Networker Turbos take over in 1992. We rode aboard 50023 ‘Howe’ to the Southern’s future Channel Tunnel terminal in July 1990.
Gloucester Rail Day: One of the most ambitious railtour programmes yet shows an immense variety of workings to Gloucester for its ‘Rail Day’. This feature concentrates on the railtours rather than the exhibition, including fascinating ‘double-enders’ ( two 37s at each end of a train!) and rare motive power and branches (including Sharpness).
Preservation News Focus: Action on the Bluebell, Swanage, Cholsey and Wallingford, Yorkshire Dales, West Somerset, GWR, Bo’ness and Strathspey as they gear up for the Summer!
The Middleton Railway: This, the first standard gauge preserved railway, is the subject of our profile in ARPS 30, with its fascinating collection of vintage locomotives and stock, including the unique visit of the first privately-preserved standard gauge locomotive, GNR 0-6-0ST No.1247 and archive film of the railway.
BR Newslines: Tamworth Castle and 47407 at Garsdale, Red 47533 and 86419, the ‘Butterfly Train’ on Tyneside, Grangetown branch, Killer 20s again, 37 to Weymouth, Haymarket at Oxford, DBSO in Anglia, backward 91, 307s and 322s Yorkshire, 320 in Glasgow, 156 to Edinburgh and three 37s together!
60s In Action: Railfreight’s newest main line diesels are still rather difficult to find at work, but we have been out and about to record them and to see the latest deliveries from –  and to – Brush at Loughborough. We also visit Procor at Wakefield to see the bodies being built!
Railfreight Customers 1 -Tioxide UK: We visit Immingham Dock in foul weather to see ilmenite (a black sticky substance) being unloaded – and blown everywhere – for rail transhipment on the once-a-month Class 9 unfitted along the Grimsby and Immingham Tramway, behind a class 37, to the premises of paint manufacturers Tioxide UK. Also seen are industrial diesels and a 47.
The Talyllyn Railway (Part Two): Celebrating the 40th Anniversary Year of this pioneer line, this part takes up up the railway in the Summer of 1990.
Main Line Steam: Here it is! Fourteen more main line steam engines at work: 2005 and 5305 in Scotland, 6024 and 71000 on the Welsh Borders, 71000, 4472, 34027 and 6201 in North Wales, 35028 and 53809 on the ‘White Rose’ and 46229, 45596, 777, 44871 and 60009 on the S&C!
Cover Photo: The NRM’s GNR Class J52 No.1247 at Moor Road on the Middleton Railway, featured in this issue on 24 June 1990.
Approximately 120 minutes.
