Country Railway Routes

Craven Arms to Llandeilo

the heart of the Wales Line

by John Organ
Although located within an area dominated by the Great Western Railway, the majority of the line was under the control of the London and North Western Railway and its successor the London, Midland and Scottish. As a consequence, the motive power requirements were always to be provided by the superlative locomotives from Crewe and Derby. The photographs within these pages will convey the pastoral charm of this fascinating route as it passes through the countryside from the Welsh Marches towards the industrial regions of South Wales.

The Oakwood Press. The Kington Lines John Mair. OL172

This volume is divided into 3 sections- 1. Historical Outline 2. Operation of the line and 3 A journey over the line in the 1930's.
1. The history covers early transport in West Herefordshire, tramroads to Hay and and Kington, the relationship to other nearby railways and describes the construction of the Leominster and Kington Railway. . Parliament passed the Hereford Hay and Brecon Railway Act in August 1959. Coal and limestone were an important contribution to the lines as elsewhere in the rail systems of Britain. Not everything was straight forward and there followed a lot of coming and going and change of personnel but the line was completed in1874 and opened that August.
2. Operation of the line. Titley junction was the pivot of the Kingston lines but Kingston was where all services began and terminated. Gradients on the line were mainly reasonable but there were sections where steep gradients occured. Passenger services were frequent and combined with the movement of milk wagons. The Midland Railway and the GWR were both involved in running the system. Passenger rolling stock is described and time tables listed. The railway was scaled down in the second world war and never recovered after the war ended. The contractor Charles Chambers was the Chairman of the Old Radnor Trading Company Limited and he played an important part in completing work on the railway and then arranging traffic. Details of the locos used and the loco sheds at Leominster and Kington are described in detail. Signalling was an important aspect as all track was single and is well described, including drawings, at various locations.
3. A journey over the lines in the 1930's.
The Leominster to Kington route is described and supported by photographs. Informative descriptions of facilities including stations, goods sheds, sidings, gas and oil lighting and water towers are provided. The route crossed into England and Wales and so entered Radnorshire. The stations at Stanner, Dolyhir and New Radnor are detailed. The volume ends with an informative bibliography.(note my copy had 2 sets of pages 17 to 32)
