Fascinating, interesting and informative.
An excellent book covering Rugby and the West Midlands well illustrated with photos of a railway very different from what remains today.
The compilation of this book and the amount of research needed in its completion must have been a labour of love for the author. The amount of meeting minutes and other documents that had to be reviewed must have been a massive exercise and is commendable.
The book in places does indeed have too much information packed into it, but I feel that is necessary in order to paint the overall picture.
Having known the railways of the area for over 60 years, it gave me facts I never knew such as the allocation of "Warships" to Bescot and on a personal level after 56 years I now know why a Black 5 came through Solihull station light engine on the morning of 4 March 1967 !. It was the last steam engine I saw for over 5 years.
What strikes me on reading through the book is the constant changing in the decision making process, the waste this must caused and obviously the continual upheaval and uncertainty imposed on ordinary railwaymen and women whilst they were still trying to run a train service throughout this period.
As I have said, the waste of public money seems excessive especially when the same thing was happening all over BR at the same time. For me the one example that sticks out is Ryecroft Depot- surely some use could have been found for it after all that investment for just 5-6 years of life.
My final comment is that this book is the first ever that to me demonstrates why Dr Beeching had to embark on his report on cost controls, etc, in order to salvage something of the railway industry.
A book packed with information which gives an insight into the mindset of railway managers in the 1960's.
The Author and the LNWR Society have done very well in publishing a very interesting book.
