EDWARD THOMPSON Wartime CME

by Simon Martin

Upon announcement on RW Web on the publication of this book, this was an unsolicited response "Great to see Simon Martin's amazing research in printed form. This may well be the definitive work on Thompson.  Presented to the Gresley Society and he was applauded!"
The author has seen other works published and as an Asset Engineer for Network Rail
and Treasurer of the M.N.L.P.S. and member of the Gresley Society, Simon has gone to great lengths to bring us a fascinating account of the life and work of Edward Thompson, his locomotives and his place in the history of the LNER.

This is far from a boring random study with very little research, instead it has been fastidiously put together with full reference and examination of the man and his time on the railway from the period just before Gresley's death and the way in which he handed the baton on to Arthur Peppercorn, after the tumultuous war years.
Along the way the author brings to life in a truly absorbing manner this important wartime period and how the effects of the conflict steered his judgements, advice and design criteria in a way we think has never been seen before. It is no wonder it was applauded by what many would recognise as potentially Edward Thompson's perhaps harshest critics as devotees of Sir Nigel Gresley's work from members of the Gresley Society.
We examine each of Thompson's own designs, and the work carried out on his predecessor's locomotives to bring the best out of them and the resources available at the time.

Historical Revision

An excellent balanced study of Thompson’s work, wartime circumstances and legacy to the LNER. As a historian myself by training, I was impressed by the extent of the primary evidence base. One, only minor, point is that more mention of his renumbering scheme would have added value to the book: it did carry on till the end of steam, plus BR’s 60k!

Excellent - Best researched book in years

Just finished reading this excellent book. The research is brilliant especially when researching engines designed 80 years ago. The information and the way it is presented is very revealing on how good the many of the Thompson ideas were. It is a shame that the Use of Engine Power document doesn't go beyond 1946 - I was always wanting more. Perhaps further analysis of the engine record cards could provide this and would also overcome the issue that the Thompson engines were new so should be more reliable. Simon has revealed in a very objective way that the Thompson designs and ideas were sound, and as a company operating trains that availability and efficiency of loco's was a the priority over form. The B1 ended up as the biggest class of LNER loco's so can't be that bad. I think it would be interesting from an operational view how they compared with the LMS Black5, the GWR Hall and the BR std 5. Until reading Simon's book I was not aware how much better an A2/2 was over the P2 or that Great Northern was better when rebuilt but wasn't really a rebuild - perhaps the LNER missed a trick and if the number and name follows the frames then Great Northern could have reappeared as an A3. Perhaps the accountants wouldn't allow another locomotive on the books. This book is well worth the money - including the duplication on pages 131 and 132. Simon must be commended on his research when it is easy to fall back on secondary sources.

Very insightful puts the facts straight

Learning about any Locomotive CME is a always in delight to read about there life there locos and there time in the railways and Edward Thompson a man who has been wrongfully demonised for many years has finely had his name cleared firstly from Simon and his research I first seeing Simons talk at my local Model railway club and this book is a really insightful look into the man and his work.
With lots of facts figures on the mans work and the LNER in the war time.

Well done simon you did Edward Thompson proud!

It cuts through the myths and misrepresentations and forms an excellent contribution to the debate about Thompson.

Edward Thompson - Not the Bogeyman but the Thinker

Edward Thompson - mistrusted by some, dismissed by others as woolly-headed - was a highly qualified engineer whose greatest problem was his loyalty to the company he worked for. And that company, the LNER, rewarded him by going out after Gresley's death to canvas for a successor. When none was forthcoming they appointed Thompson in a 'devil you know' frame of mind. Son-in-law to Vincent Raven, if Grouping had been held over for another year or two he'd have been the NER's choice for Locomotive Superintendent, with experience in wartime exigencies along with Raven in WWI. Straight-thinking, Gresley's conjugated valve gear was anathema to his logical mind - wasted materials, wasted shed time, wasted storage space at a time of emergency ...
