The British Railway Stories 4

The Original Stories Part 2

The Legacy of Gadwall

by Simon A C Martin

Following on from the success of the first three books on the Tale of the Unnamed Engine, Great Western Glory and The Original Stories Part 1 we journey back to the late nineteen forties, to experience Britain's steam railways like never before with this wonderful fourth companion book.

The British Railway Stories are rich in imagery and history, we revisit the stories from the famed characters made a cult hit through YouTube.

Join our characters once again as we journey back to gentler times to share in their adventures once more taking in the sights and sounds of Britain's railways as they used to be!

These impressive and collectable editions, feature supremely detailed, hand-coloured, original illustrations by Dean Walker, as they capture the hearts of a whole new generation of young minds as they journey with our heroes across the length and breadth of Great Britain, behind steam engines great and small.

All of the stories are based in real locations, featuring real steam locomotives that have existed, with real history and facts on railways cementing it all together.

The stories originally existed as a made for YouTube Video Series for children in the 7-11 age group.

Since the first video appeared on YouTube in 2007, and the final episode of the original series in March 2012. These videos featuring these charming characters, have racked up over 12 million views globally as of 2022.

This book has been written primarily for children ages 7-11, but has been written with parents reading aloud and with children in mind.

A great gift idea for both parents and grandparents for younger family members to encourage children's reading.

Another Grand Addition

As a fan of the YouTube series these stories were originally as, I was very excited for this volume. The Legacy of Gadwall still gives me chills to this day. I was also quite surprised at the additional new story. A must have for fans of railway stories young and old.

Worth every single cent!!!!!

These are admittedly better than the vids they're based on. Better than anything Thomas the Tank Engine of recent years and better than Chuggington. Perfect for anybody interested in railroading. There are several dark moments but nothing too bad.

These are the stories they tell

Having been introduced to the original series on YouTube when The Legacy Of Gadwall debuted, it was so refreshing to see these stories in a printed format with Dean Walker's illustrations.

While not as detailed as Tale Of The Unnamed Engine or Great Western Glory, the artwork manages to maintain the recognisable fine style of the series without being too complicated.

Seeing Tale Of The Tay was a nice bonus, too. While it was a shame that this wasn't filmed for the YouTube series, it's understandable that the story lent itself to a higher budget with more detailed sets.

Overall, just like the other editions of this series, this book remains easy to read while informative, dramatic, entertaining and engaging. I can't wait to see the rest of the YT series adapted in the next book/s

Another fantastic book by Simon Martin

As a fan of the original series on YouTube, I am extremely happy that I got the chance to read the books last year. Today I have read the latest book that is Part 2 of the Original Stories: The Legacy of Gadwall. Looking back on it now, I got all nostalgic again and I remember getting all emotional when I first watched the episode. Still, it got me interested in the Gadwall engine altogether. I also love that other stories - Hawk eyed!, Suburban Tank, Silent Night and Great Scott! are brought into book format and it's great that the cancelled episode "Tale of the Tay" has been brought to life in the book. I remember reading about the Tay Bride Disaster, but never have I ever heard about the poem until I read the book. Nonetheless, it's a really good story and I'm very much looking forward to seeing more stories that have weren't in the YouTube series.

Speaking of which, I'm also looking forward to reading the next book. Hopefully, we'll get Day of the Deltic and Fowler's Ghost. If this book does well, I hope we'll get that chance.

Enjoyable read to the letter~

Far better than the original series it's based upon. The illustrations' colors are so vibrant. The characters are all wrote right as well: Sir Ralph's egotistical and arrogant but cares about his friends, Allen's happy-go-lucky and hard working, Herbert's a worrier, Nigel's the hard working grump, Tavish is somewhat vain and complains constantly sometimes, and Stephen's the cheerful wise old sage with a spring in his step, an eye on the future, and knows when to stomp his authority over the others when they cause trouble. The Legacy Of Gadwall was the darkest story in the book for sure. Compared to Thomas & Friends and even Chuggington, this series gets FAR less recognition. While both of them, especially the former nowadays, are only toy-selling money pits, the British Railway Series gives the most grounded, historical stories of railways ever. Simon's come a long way since his buddies and him made "A Great Problem Goes West!" almost 20 years ago. Long live the BRWS!!!!!!!!!
