SOUTHERN ELECTRICS in Colour 1955 - 1972

We have taken another dip into colour archives to select the very best of colour photographs for you with this one. All our favourites are here along with a selection of rarities.

Classes 70, 71, 73, 74 are all on show in a variety of liveries and locations, along with examples of 2-BIL, 2-HAL, 4-SUBs both pre and post war varieties, 2-EPB, 4-EPB, 2-HAP, 4-LAV, 4-COR, 4-BUF, 5-BEL, 6-PUL, 6-PAN, 6-COR, 4-CEP, 4-CIG, 4-VEP, 4-REP, 4-TC, 7-TC & 4-BIG. Add in the odd Class 33 & 03 in the background and we have a great variety of types and locations to be savoured once more, when we thought they had all gone forever.

Having chosen views to bring you the best quality available having trawled through many thousands of shots, we have selected the very best with great composition, colour and in sunny conditions. We start in 1955 and take a journey around the Southern Region into and through the 1970s ending with the demise of the 2-BIL, 2-HAL 4-COR and the Brighton Belle along with the last run of the Golden Arrow.

96 pages in larger landscape format to display these superb images at their very best

on high quality glossy art paper in HARDBACK.

"I have just recently purchased several of your books regarding Southern Electric trains and I have been suitably impressed by each of them especially in the clarity and quality of the photographs. I was a Southern Electric Driver for a number of years and have an interest in the old slam door trains so your publications have brought back many happy memories.

It has been so gratifying to see these old trains in what I believe have been unpublished photographs and I hope that, perhaps in time, you may develop further publications as there now appears to be a growing interest in these old Southern EMUs.

I was also impressed by the speed of delivery especially in connection with the Southern Electric scrapbook volume II which duly arrived today.

Thanks for a first-class service and excellent quality publications." Trevor Harris by email

Well produced and very useful

As a modelling and historical reference this volume now forms an invaluable addition to the library and should be of interest to all those with any connection to the SR electrified railways of the 1950s-70s. Most images have not been previously seen by this reviewer.

Abbreviations

We are not all railway buffs. Folk like me want this type of book for nostalgic reasons so please help readers like me with a glossary of terms and abbreviations. Thank you

I
Ian - Southern electric fan!
A blast from the past!

I spent several happy years travelling between Three Bridges and Chichester daily and many leisure hours around the southern electrics between London, Portsmouth, Salisbury (bit of steam), Brighton and Bognor. Them ‘runabout tickets’ were great!!
All those ‘Hal’s, bils ,4cor, 4buf etc’ even on subs and epbs and occasionally the Brighton Belle. Now I am 80 in NE lner territory. Fantastic trip down memory lane.
