abc British Rail Locomotives and Other Motive Power

Combined Volume 1967

A popular feature of this publishing programme for a number of years has been the fascimile reprints of selected titles from the famous Ian Allan Publishing abc series that first appeared in the 1940s. These modestly priced reprints are welcomed by both the enthusiasts who may have used them when they first came out and also by those not around at the time they were first published. They provide wonderful, nostalgic snapshots of a railway scene which has long since disappeared.
The latest reissue in the series - abc British Rail Locomotives and Other Motive Power Combined Volume 1967. Two years before in 1965, there had been 3,000 steam locos on BR's books. But such was the remorseless march of diesel and electric traction, by the end of 1967, this had shrunk to a mere 361; 307 of LMS origin, 2 ex LNER locos and only 52 out of the 999 BR Standard locos built. This is also the first of our abc reprints which uses the term 'British Rail' in its title, which having been introduced in 1965.
The focus of the 1967 abc Combined is therefore firmly on diesel and electric motive power with new locos being added all the time and almost all of the early Modernisation Plan types still in service. For generations of enthusiasts, these were the locos they grew up with and spotted so this volume will be one many can relate to more strongly than the rapidly fading age of steam.

A Great companion to look up about what operated in the UK when Nationalisation took over back in 1948 to what still operated in the late 1960s with steam being phased out and Diesel and Electric traction replacing these iconic locos ❤️
A Great read .love the identification of what was still operating ,Sadly not the case in today's world 🌍🌎
Many thanks,Money well spent.
Regards Mr Stephen Powell 👍

To Strathwood
Many thanks for your book ,The 1967 British Rail Locomotives and Other motive power reprinted in 2022 which was surprising as I thought it was the original version ,Still pleased with book as it shows what operated in 1967,Before I was born 6 years later in July 1973 ,56 years ago Steam power was fast being replaced by Diesel and Electric Locomotion to more cleaner comfortable operating systems in an age where old Victorian Guage railways were being replaced with new railways and also The infamous Dr Beeching era was taking drastic steps to close down railways in Rural communities that relied on them to get from A to B ,( Vile excuse of a man doing this )All because the car and the bus was seen as another convenient mode of transport .
Any how that a side I remember growing up in the 1970s and 1980s watching Diesel and Electric traction operating to Deltics,Hoovers to English Electric Class 37 Tractors that were also popular to the Brush and Sulzer Type Locomotives from the 31,33 or the 26 and 27s to the 47s that have a distinctive sound ,A few still operate on today's railways since Privatisation but looking at this book is wow ,Love the history of what was operating 56 years ago.
Have left 5 star ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Rating .
Many thanks Mr Stephen Powell 👍
